Winter Camp 2015

16th-18th January 2015
The Quarries Campsite,
Cosgrove

This was our joint Winter Camp with six of the older cubs, and 5 of the older scouts camping together, with a selection of cub and scout leaders.

We camped at The Quarries Scout Campsite, just outside Cosgrove near Milton Keynes, which is a site both the cub and scout sections have camped at before. We camped indoors in The Lodge, which contained 4 large bedrooms, kitchen & toilets, and a large central room for activities and dining.

During the weekend the Cubs and Scouts enjoyed a full range of activities. Friday Evening after arriving, we had a Wide Game on site, which helped us find where everything was. We then moved indoors for an Interactive Quiz, which had questions about scouting, and the leaders, including a question where they had to guess the ages of each leader, which produced some interesting and worrying answers! We finished the night with toasted sandwiches, before turning in and lights out.

Saturday Morning began with a full breakfast, before heading off just after 10am to Salcey Forest. There we followed the Gruffalo's trail, and then the Elephant Walk. Along the way the Cubs & Scouts had to try and find different tree species (with lots of help from our resident tree expert Alan), birds, insects and other winter visitors. The walk took us to the Tree Top Way, were we had amazing views over the forest canopy, and all the way across to Northampton. The Cubs & Scouts spent some time in the playground before we returned to the campsite.

Saturday Afternoon consisted of a variety of activities, run by the different leaders. The first activity was a game of Cricket, followed by tracking, and then human battleships indoors. After a quick drink break, they then had a teamwork game called "The Abyss" where they had to get the whole team from one end of the room to the other without touching the floor, then a String Trail outside in the dark, and finishing off with Orienteering around the site.

Saturday Evening after a lovely supper, the Tuck Shop opened for the Cubs and Scouts, and we then played Rapidough, which is like pictionary but with playdoh. The leaders team was far too competative, but this spurred the Cub & Scout teams on to take the game to 50 rounds long! Everyone had a great time, and we played Sleeping Lions afterwards to calm things down a little, before having Hot Chocolate, and then turning in for the night.

Sunday Morning began with Breakfast, and then we all went to the campsites shooting range, where everyone got 2 rounds of shooting in. We then played two final outdoor games, Darts, and a Hoop game, with the leaders participating once again.

Sunday Afternoon we had Lunch, before the final Tuck Shop, and then tidying up and packing everything away, and returning home.

It was a very enjoyable and successful winter camp, and everyone went home smiling.
